ShEEty Masks
Sheet masks are what?
Happy Saturday everyone!
I hope you had an amazing week!
It’s the 15th day of the month- we’re halfway through the 4th month of this year and I can’t believe it! I just lost track of time.
And now I’m like
Anyway,
I hope you are not in the same situation.
I hope you’re elated and slaying it!
If not,
It’s okay
Resort to affirmations, ask your friends and family to give you a pep talk, workout- do whatever works for you
BUT. DON’T. FEEL. SHITTY. PLEASE.
Yesterday,
I googled ways to feel better and calm down
AND
Guess what?
It gave me a list of “calming“ aromatic candles and sheet masks.
But whatever happened to actually helping people out?
Google can do so much better
The solutions never mentioned sleep
Sleep is the ultimate form of selfcare-
Show me good pillows or eye masks,
I’d probably buy that.
Just like coffee is synonymous to productivity,
Sheet masks are synonymous to skincare
And skincare is synonymous to self-care
C’mon! It’s not complex at all!
You might be thinking-
”What are sheet masks?”
For those of you who don’t know, sheet masks are soggy pieces of material with holes where your eyes, nose, and mouth are. They're saturated with all kinds of different substances, and claim to address everything from sagging to dullness to blemishes to dryness.
But how did they become so popular?
Let’s do some Tour-De-Masque, shall we?
Here’s a story-
Wayy before K Kulture (K-{pop, food, drama, beauty}) was a thing,
Geishas (Japanese entertainers, were known for their beauty) would soak bits of silk rags in flower-infused water and rest them on their faces as a part of their beauty routine.
They invented the concept of sheet masks.
Cut to the year 2018
Lady Gaga was sabki favourite for her debut movie A Star Is Born
At the same time, everyone loved Bela Hadid’s look in Met Gala
So, they were the talk of the world
And it’s around this time when these two ladies created the hottest trend of Instagram-
Wear a sheet mask
Take a selfie
Show the world what me-time really is!
Main, Mera sheet mask aur Meri tanhaai
There you have it!
Welcome to the glam squad!
This is how the Sheet Mask Revolution started
(I wouldn’t really call it a revolution, but let’s not get too much into semantics)
Cut to the pandemic and post-pandemic era,
Now, sheet masks have mutated
We have sheet masks covered with golden foil, some have CHANEL written all over them and some even have bubbles!
During 2020-22, brands- small and big, started selling sheet masks.
Sheet masks were storming the Indian market.
As people came to grips with the pandemic, they began re-evaluating their personal well-being needs and turned to beauty as a means of self-care and stress relief.

_____________
Back in 2019, my friend told me about how sheet masks were a total game-changer for her skin, I decided to try it.
And it didn’t really do anything- except for being sticky.
I still don’t understand the whole hype around sheet masks being the epitome of relaxation.
I mean, this is how sheet masks are marketed
Firstly, it feels sticky.
Secondly, you literally have to lie immobile for 15 minutes
You can’t have a drink with the face mask on
AND
Last but not the least, you don’t really smile that wide, or smile at all because it feels sticky
(This is probably the third time)
Thank God we are in the de-influencing era!
Experts says that sheet masks are no good!
And what about the waste that’s generated?
Yes, brands have compostable sheet masks that cost a fortune.
Ultimately, everything is ending up in landfills.
Sheet masks are just for the gram
AND
They do not add to your glam
For me it’s a big no.
What do you think about sheet masks?
Have you tried it?
Did you like it?
Let me know!
Alright then
I hope you have a fab week ahead
Until next time
Toodeloo!
